NPP Primaries: Oppong Nkrumah In Trouble

The political race within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is taking a new twist, as young and vibrant youth within the party are ready to take over the mantle and push the party to victory in the 2016 elections.

Information gathered within the party is that there was uneasy calm within the camp of some veteran Members of Parliament when the news broke out that some youth including Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah and Mr. John Obiri Yeboah, a businessman and freight forwarder have picked nomination forms to contest in the main opposition New Patriotic Party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries in Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency in the Eastern Region.

According to information, Mr. Yeboah who many have ticked including chiefs and elders in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency to be the next Member of Parliament (MP) was the first to hit the road to pick the forms immediately nominations were opened.

Soon after he picked his nomination papers, Mr. Yeboah’s   parliamentary campaign flooded the media, sending some uneasiness in the camps of other contenders, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

However, Mr. Yeboah has said his aggression to bring development projects to the area was enough testimony of his capability.

Speaking to The New Crusading GUIDE in an interview, Mr. John Obiri Yeboah submitted that his decision to contest the public office was not one he has made lightly, but that he weighed the options and decided to take his chances against the potential risks and discomforts to political life.

Touching on some of his achievement in the constituency, the 32-year- old energetic man submitted that he had assisted the communities within the constituency with numerous items including “cash, computers, trophy to Ayirebi, school building for Wudo Islamic, and scholarships to brilliant students in the constituency, adding that within the party he had done a lot for the constituency”.

This paper can confirm that all the chiefs and elders within the constituency have suggested that Mr.  Obiri Yeboah becomes the next MP if things go well for him in the primaries.

Meanwhile, Broadcaster and business man, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has officially confirmed his decision to run for political office on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.

It follows several rumours he was going to contest the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency primaries of the NPP.

The former host of the Joy FM Super morning Show was tightlipped on the matter which generated some amount of controversy in the media.

On Sunday a group calling itself the Akyemansa Youth For Oppong Nkrumah (AYFON) in an interview with Myjoyonline.com vowed to make the broadcaster their Member of Parliament.

They had already organised a number of press conferences to rally delegates of the NPP ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for May 24, 2015.

Led by one Paul Asamoah, the group picked up forms for the Ofoase Ayirebi Parliamentary primaries on behalf of Oppong-Nkrumah, albeit without his consent. He said they were hopeful they would be able to convince Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah to contest the seat on their behalf.

It appears the group achieved its quest. Later Sunday, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah took to facebook to formally confirm and announce his decision to vie for the Ofoase Ayirebi seat.

"I will like to officially announce that I will be running for the Parliamentary Candidature of the New Patriotic Party in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency.

"My decision to run for public office is not one I have made lightly. I have weighed the calls and encouragements to run, against the potential risks and discomforts of Political life. I have spent weeks consulting with delegates and members of my community and my family.

"In Ghana today many of us complain about the ills of our nation. However, few of us are willing to offer ourselves to be part of the process of fixing these ills. Many of us think nothing can be done. Others think the costs will be too high.

After careful consideration, I am of the view that many more of us can put aside our personal needs and take up a challenge higher than ourselves. I believe that many more of us who are unhappy with the status-quo must step up and be part of the process of fixing our problems," he said.
