One Victim In Dansoman Gas Explosion Dies

One of two people injured in Monday gas explosion at Dansoman in Accra has died. The other is in critical condition at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Doctors at the Korle Bu Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre who confirmed the news to JoyNews said the two victims sustained extensive burns.

Meanwhile, the gas station has been closed down to allow for investigations into the matter.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently in a stakeholder meeting to decide if it should stop gas stations from operating in residential areas to avert future explosions.

The National Petroleum Authority, the Ghana National Fire Service, Town and Country Planning Department and other state agencies are attending the meeting.

Chief Programme Officer at the EPA told Joy News the stakeholder meeting is to allow all stakeholders take a common position and decision on what to do to prevent any incident of such nature from recurring.

He blamed operators of the gas station for being negligent in their duties.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Prince Billy Anaglatey, on the other hand, is pushing for closure of fuel or gas stations that are not adhering to standards and regulations.

He said if owners of the gas station had taken safety precautionary measures, the situation would not have occurred.

He said the Service will intensify its checks on the various fuel and gas filling stations across the country and will close down those who violate regulations.
