Girls Educational Dream Comes Alive

The educational dreams of 13-year-old Ago Anita, has been kept alive once again after almost five years out of the classroom to give care to her sick grandmother.

Anita’s dream of  pursuing  her dream career of becoming a nurse was truncated while in  class one at Mangotsonya Basic School, in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, when  she  was asked to leave school to  give care to her grandmother who was terminally ill.

Anita was believed to be the only in her household whose blood was spiritually compatible with that of her grandmother and the only one fit to give her care.

It was believed that her grandmother’s condition got worse each time anyone without that kind of compatibility got close to her.

Weekend Finder reported Anita’s story last month when the paper visited the school to assess the impact of the MGCubed education project in that school.

MGCubed (Making Ghanaian Girls Great) is a component of an ongoing educational  project delivered by  Gems Education Solutions a UK consultancy funded by Britain's Department for International Development (DfID) as part of its Girls' Education Challenge (GEC), which aims to help a million of the world's poorest girls improve their lives through education.

Although Anita was out of school, she was taking advantage of the programme to get some education.

Touched by her desire to get back to  the class room ,Weekend Finder followed up to Anita’s  parents at home in the company of  a Community Committee Secretary of MGCubed education project to plead with them to give Anita a second chance at school.

Anita’s mother, Mrs Abena Addo, promised to give Anita a second chance during the visit.

Weekend Finder is however pleased to report that Anita is back to school starting all over from class one where left off and determined to pursue her dreams.

Her class teacher, Mrs Doris Faidoo told Weekend Finder she is confident Anita would catch up with lessons in her class with time.

“She is doing averagely well and I am confident she will pick up with time”, she said.

Anita expressed joy at the opportunity given her to pursue he education and promised not to let her parents down.
