556 Nurses Of Ridge Hospital On Strike

Nurses at the Ridge Hospital on Tuesday withdrew their services for non-payment of their March salaries.

The 556 nurses are blaming the Human Resource Manager of the hospital for the mishap, and the management for not showing concern.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), a cross-section of the nurses who were in mufti, expressed their anger about the way management of the hospital have handled the situation.

Mr Kwaku Asante-Krobea, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association, told the GNA that series of meetings have been held with the nurses and the management to listen to each side.

“After listening to both sides, we will be meeting the aggrieved nurses on Wednesday, April 15, to convince them to return to work, whilst the Controller and the Accountant Generals Department (CAGD) worked to rectify the anomaly”.

He explained that management of the hospital had suggested to the nurses to go for overdrafts from their banks since CAGD had promised that their March salary would be added to that of April. But this the nurses had refused to do for fear of paying extra bank charges at their own cost.

Mr Emmanuel Taadi, Hospital Administrator, told the GNA that when their attention was drawn to the fact that the nurses could get their salaries, “we quickly made a presentation to Controller and requested that we submit a supplementary payment voucher for them, but that was not acceptable.”

Mr Taadi attributed their inability to validate the salaries of the nurses to the fact that they could not down-load the data electronically as had been introduced within the 48-hour period given them.

“Even though the nurses have withdrawn their services, a skeleton staff is assisting the doctors to take care of in-patients and emergencies, and we hope it will be resolved after their Wednesday meeting with their leadership”.

When GNA visited the hospital only in-patients were being attended to.
