Youth Fights Police Over Arrest Of Three Persons @ Chinto

The Youth of Chinto in Nsawam Adoadjiri in the Eastern Region are up in arms against the Ghana Police Service for arresting the Chief of the area Nana Yaw Finako III and two others on the alleged killing of Nana Kofi Mankata who claim to be the chief of the area.

According to the youth the arrested persons don’t know anything about the death of Nana Kofi Mankata adding that his death didn’t occur within the Chinto Township but rather a nearby town.

Speaking to the media in Accra a couple of days ago, the spokesperson for the youth Mr. Daniel Owusu pointed out  that the people in the community are now living in fear and panic due to the activities of land guards after the death of the said chief.

The land guards are reported to have walled part of the lands they have occupied to prevent anybody from trespassing.

He confirmed the attacks saying the land guards sometimes fire gunshots around the lands they (people of Chinto) are occupying to ward off the farmers and other residents.

Mr. Owusu said the police have been to the lands to warn the land guards, but the land guards have been left without further reprimand since then.

To add to this, he said has made all the native of Chinto move from the town to nearby villages.

Meanwhile it would be recalled that  three people arrested by the police in connection with the murder of the Chief of Chinto, Nana Kofi Mankata and his driver at Adoagyiri in Nsawam in the Eastern Region, were put before court last Thursday.

They are Nana Fianko III, 29, farmer, also a nephew of Nana Mankata; Abusuapanin Joseph Kwabena Opare, 47, farmer and Nii Odarlai Quarshie, 49, businessman.

They were remanded in police custody by the magistrate’s court presided over by Madam Benadine Senoo to assist in further investigations.

The accused persons were charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime, to wit murder, contrary to section 23 (1) of Act 29/60 and murder, contrary to section 46 of Act 29/60 of the Criminal Code.

Their pleas were not taken and they are to re-appear in court on April 17.

But the youth and some residents are calling on the Interior Minister to intervene to help release the arrested elders of the town for peace to prevail.
