MTN Ghana Foundation has launched Season II of the MTN Heroes of Change project at their head office in Accra. The initiative which was launched in 2013 is to reward and encourage hard working Ghanaians who are bringing change to their communities and the country as a whole. According to MC of the launch, Kwame Sefa Kayi, the programme is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Members of the public are asked to nominate people who have supported their communities in the areas of Education, Health, Economic Empowerment, Community Crusading, Environment and Social Protection. MTN received more than six hundred nominations. A total of 20 nominees where finally shortlisted by a jury made up of renowned citizens including Rev. Albert Ocran (Motivational Speaker), Dr. Doris Dartey (Communications Consultant), Mr. Mohammed Awal (Publisher) and Mr. Sidney Casely Hayford ( Economist). MTN televised the inspiring stories of the 20 nominees on select TV stations across the country. At the end of Season I, Dr Abrokwa Yankyera, a plastic surgeon and founder of the Graft Foundation emerged the winner. He received a cash prize of GHC50,000, a citation and a plaque for his work. In all six people were recognised for playing an active role in their communities. Season II of the project is expected to take the project to a higher level. The MTN Ghana Foundation has over the years invested significant resources to improve the lives of millions of people in Ghana. The projects are all focused on improving access to Health, Education and Economic Empowerment. Ag CEO of MTN Ghana Mr. Eric Nsarkoh who launched the 2015 project said MTN is a caring company and they are happy to reward people in the communities who are helping to address social needs. He announced that the ultimate winner for this year will collect ghc 100,000 with ghc 5,000 going to the finalists and category winners taking home ghc 20,000. He noted that the public will have to benefit by donating to any of the ten shortlisted projects through SMS and MTN Mobile money. Cynthia Lumor a senior official of MTN commended all those who played a role in the initial event and hoped that the second season would be an improvement. She also congratulated the judges.
