We refer to an article published in your highly esteemed paper of Saturday March 7, 2015, page 10 under the above and wish to comment on it.
We as members of the 31st December Women’s Movement (31ST DWM) were shocked and dismayed by the portion of article that alluded to the fact that the name of our great legacies the 31st December Movement has been changed.
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was reported to have said it at a governance forum organised by the Community Organisation Bureau Network of Ghana (COBNOG) and Development Women’s Movement was said to have replaced the 31st December Women’s Movement.
This change of name by no less a person but the former First Lady and President of Movement and wife of the Leader of the 31st December Revolution raises many questions.
Firstly, Is her action legal? In our view it is not. There has been no forum where members of the Movement as a collective, decided on the change of name as demanded by our constitution. She should not and cannot unilaterally change the name of our noble Organisation. Secondly, is the name 31st December Women’s Movement now an albatross or offensive?
We believe our mentor and father, Flt. Lt. J. J. Rawlings and many Cadres of the Revolution will receive this news with dismay and as an act of betrayal.
We, therefore, call on the former First Lady to come clean on the publication or be prepared for subsequent consequences.
We pray that our rejoinder will find space in your subsequent publications.
