Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has charged the party’s executives in the Western Region to remain strong advocates for development.
In his view, the region had been short-changed by successive governments, to the extent that the people remained poor even though a chunk of the nation's wealth comes from that region.
At a meeting of Western Region PPP constituency executives at Asankragua, Dr Nduom said it pained him when some Ghanaians rained insults on the region’s chiefs when they legitimately asked for 10 per cent of oil revenue accruing to the state.
“Gold, bauxite, manganese, cocoa, timber and now oil and gas are found in the region and yet the roads remain terrible,” he stated.
He therefore tasked PPP executives, members and supporters to stand by the region and advocate for the provision of the resources needed to modernise it.
In the same vein, Dr Nduom said he would support any attempt to correct the wrongs done to communities such as Akwatia, Obuasi, Bibiani, Awaso, Tarkwa, Prestea and Bogoso, where development had not been commensurate with the natural resources mined there
To him, the PPP should be a progressive human-development advocate always so he asked the executives to remain wide awake and resolve to not sit by and watch the country destroyed by corruption and tribalism.
Dr Nduom met with the executives as part of the PPP's efforts to strengthen its organisation in preparation for the 2016 elections.
The Regional Youth Organiser of the party, Mr Asiedu Simpey, said the region had successfully elected executives for all constituencies and recently elected the regional executive.
Their task is to strengthen the party at the polling stations.
He encouraged the executives to make sure that they elected men and women with good qualifications and experience and who could command respect as parliamentary candidates to enable them to win parliamentary seats in 2016.
The Communications Director of the party, Mr Richmond Keelson, encouraged the executives to be resolute in their support for the party.
He also told them that the next election was very important to Ghanaians.
