Electrician Jailed For Stealing Copper Wires

An Electrician, Senyo Zogli, who stole 24 pieces of copper wire worth GH¢42,000 belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Kpeve, has been fined GH¢2,000 or in default, one year imprisonment.

Zogli was unable to pay the fine and broke down in tears after the sentence was passed.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage and stealing.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent I. A. A. Ahor, told the court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essampong that, on April 15, at about 7 a.m., policemen on barrier duties at Bame, acting upon a tip-off, arrested Senyo with  two fertiliser sacks of copper wires.

Upon interrogation, he admitted stealing the wires from the premises of the ECG at Kpeve.

According to the prosecution, he led the police to the premises of the ECG and demonstrated how he scaled the wall and damaged the mesh around the copper wires before gaining access to them.

The wires are to be returned to the ECG.
