Thousands of people from all walks of life over the weekend trooped to Cape Coast in the Central Region to catch a glimpse of the President of the United State of America (USA), Barack Obama, and his family who visited the historic town. People dressed in T-shirts embossed with Obama and President Mills� pictures started converging on the forecourt of the Cape Coast Castle as early as 8:00am as security personnel were placed at some vantage points. As early as 5:00am, some roads in the metropolis had been blocked due to the US President�s visit; and some stores were also closed, creating artificial hunger in the area. Many people including chiefs and journalists became frustrated since they were prevented from going near the Omanhene�s Palace and the Cape Coast Castle to do their official work. Some of the frustrated chiefs who were dressed in their Kente cloths were pushed away by the security officials, compelling those who could not contain the harassment to return to their palaces with their palanquins and linguists. No amount of words from the Paramount Chief of Cape Coast, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, could touch the hearts of the officers to allow the chiefs to enter the palace. President Obama spent about 20 minutes interacting with the chiefs of the area while his wife, Michelle Obama was crowned �Mother of Africa� with the stool name, �Obatan Efua Nyamekye�; a name which portrays her as God�s gift to the African continent. Michelle was given a piece of Kente cloth and traditional bracelet as a symbol of her title. President Obama was also given the title �Okokodurfo Kofi Obuebueakwan,� which indicates Obama�s braveness in bracing all odds to ascend the prestigious seat as President of America. Immediately after Mr Obama�s car left for the forecourt of the Castle, President Evans Atta Mills was seen walking gorgeously in his white long dress, known locally as �boboo�, and his appearance really put some smile on the faces of the crowd who had wanted to desert the place. The tour of the Castle also included Obama�s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson and the Godmother of his children, "Madam K". In a statement, Mr Obama described the Slave Trade as one of the evils committed against humanity, especially as there was a church just above the slave dungeon. He disclosed that any group of people degrading others should be fought with all tools. President Obama said the tour was an opportunity for his two children, Malia and Sasha, to learn about their history, adding that it was also to learn about the oppression that African-Americans went through and to interact with his ancestral lineage. President Obama told African-Americans that, the Castle could be considered in two way ways - a place of profound sadness but also a place where the history of the African-American began. He commended Ghana for preserving the Castle and those who helped to abolish the Slave Trade. Although those who could not see Obama were disappointed, others who were able to see him expressed joy at seeing the President of the most powerful nation on earth.
