Private Daniel Appiah of the 6 Battalion, Kamina Barracks in Tamale is in the grips of the Military Police for the death of a 36-year-old farmer in Bunkprugu.
Jabiuk Duut was allegedly shot dead on Friday April 24, 2015 by Private Daniel Appiah with the rank NP 202427.
He was reportedly shot dead in his room during curfew hours, the deceased wife, Binantoi Jabiuk told Citi News.
According to her, the suspect allegedly instructed her to drag the deceased remains to the compound.
She described her late husband as a God fearing and caring sole breadwinner of the family who did not deserve such inhumane treatment.
She called for thorough investigation into the mystery surrounding her late husband’s death.
The uncle of the deceased, Nelson Jatuat narrated that the deceased was shot through the window after the suspect failed to break through the main door.
He suspected foul play in the incident because to him, there was no connection between the Pagnatik community and the Jamong and Jafog combatants whose renewed chieftaincy clashes necessitated the dusk till dawn curfew imposed on Bunkprugu Township and its environs.
Bunkprugu MP
The Bunkprugu Member of Parliament (MP), Solomon Boa assured the family of using the appropriate means to seek justice.
“We will make the necessary noise until justice is meted out. Before I came here I had an interaction with the police commander and he didn’t know what to tell me, he just told me that it was something that they cannot just understand, they are not denying the fact that whatever has happened is beyond their comprehension,”
“This is inhumane, this is cruel, this is bizarre and this is something that we cannot allow to happen under this our democratic dispensation.” “Curfew doesn’t necessary mean that you should go around when you hear people talking in their rooms you enter and start molesting them and asking them for money, that is the allegation everywhere which has gotten to this level.” Hon. Boa fumed.
He admonished the Minister for Interior, Hon. Mark Woyongo to place premium on the matter.
He however appealed to the bereaved family and residents of Pagnatik to remain calm and allow the rule of law to prevail.
District Police Commander
The Bunkprugu/Yunyoo District Police Commander, ASP Felix Kumado confirmed the shooting incident.
He however said investigations were underway and gave the assurance that lives and property would be protected.
ASP Felix Kumado also admitted that there were reports of excesses during the operations of the patrol teams.
He thereby asked his men to exercise maximum restraint in their attempt to enforce the law during curfew hours.
It is mandatory for residents of Bunkprugu Township and its environs to observe the curfew hours from 4pm to 6 am.
This followed renewed chieftaincy clashes between the Jamong and Jafog clans from the Bimoba community which caused the death of two persons.
