Ivory Coast AFCON Winning Squad Laments Over Unpaid Bonuses

Côte d’Ivoire international Geoffroy Serey Dié has voiced his anger about some long-overdue AFCON bonuses.

The 2015 African champions are allegedly yet to receive between CFA 500 and 700 million in bonuses for their successful continental campaign in Equatorial Guinea, with the different parties involved, including the Minister of Sports, the Minister of Finances and the Football Association blaming each other.

And while the players have so far been quiet on the issue, the Stuttgart midfielder took to the media to express his frustration.

“We won the AFCON but we haven’t received our bonus,” Serey Dié told Radio Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday evening, as reported by Soir Info.

“We were not talking about it as we didn’t want the Ivoirian people to think that we were joining the national team for money. But we played and we won, so they must give us what was promised to us. It is ours, we are not begging,” the 30-year-old added.

“They are telling us that the transfer has been done, and then they are telling us that it is just a matter of days.

“I must admit that it is frustrating as even Ghana, whom we defeated in the final, have handed out bigger bonuses.

“We are talking about it between ourselves. It is not fair not to receive our bonus as we deserve it. Those who have to pay out our bonuses must do it.”
