Open Defecation, A Problem In Wa

Open defecation in gutters and other spaces among residents in Wa Township is a worry to the Municipal Assembly, which is striving to make the town clean.

Another worry is the behaviour of residents, who always expect the assembly or Zoomlion, a sanitation management company to clear waste for them.

Mr Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, Wa Municipal Chief Executive expressed the concern when he addressed the media after a cleanup exercise in the town to mark the 6th National Sanitation Day(NSD) on Saturday.

He said residents must change their mindset and consider issues of sanitation as their routine duty and not to heap waste, awaiting NSD to clear the mess.

The Municipal Chief Executive said the assembly is finding it difficult to acquire lands from land owners to serve as dumping sites.

Mr Putiaha said the assembly is involving former assembly members and community members to help educate the people to provide household toilets to avoid open defecation and to keep their surroundings clean at all times.

He said the assembly is collaborating with the security agencies to arrest residents who defecate openly and appealed to the people to co-operate to end the practice.
