Fetish Priest Steals Corpse

A fetish priest, Obosomfo Kwaku Koranteng, of Ntronang in the Eastern Region, has been arrested for allegedly stealing the corpse of a 62-year-old man and conveying it to his shrine.

With him are two of his aides, Yaw Okyere and Anthony Nkansah, while a third accomplice is at large.

The fetish priest and his aides were said to have conveyed the body of Eric Ofosu from Afiafi, near Ntronang, to the shrine on April 23.

Their aim ostensibly was to preserve the corpse since they claimed the gods of the shrine allegedly killed him for having an amorous relation with the wife of another man.

The body has been conveyed from the shrine and deposited at the Koforidua Central Hospital for autopsy, while the fetish priest and his accomplices have been charged with ‘hindrance of inquest’, and granted bail to assist in investigations.

Confirming the incident to The Ghanaian Times on Thursday, Sergeant Gideon Boateng, Deputy Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, said acting upon information that the body of Ofosu who died in his room at Afiafi, had been confiscated and conveyed to a shrine at Ntronang, the police rushed to the town and arrested Koranteng.

During a search of his house, they found the body of the 62-year-old man in one of the shrines.

Sgt. Boateng said Koranteng claimed during interrogation, that the gods of his shrine killed Ofosu, because he had sex with someone else’s wife in 2014.

The fetish priest said the matter was reported to the gods last year, but Ofosu failed to do anything about it, so they (gods) called him to answer fo it.

The fetish priest told the police that unless the family of the deceased paid GH¢12,000, the body was not going to be released to them for burial.
