A fifteen year old girl at Asokore Mampong, near Kumasi is threatening to commit suicide if her relatives carry through a plan to push her into early marriage.
The second-year Junior High School student (name withheld) says her mother and uncle have arranged to marry her off in Cote d’Ivoire next month.
She says she cannot afford to abandon her education to marry a man far older than her, and who she knows only by a photograph.
The terrified girl who lost her father at age five in an interview with Nhyira FM’s Naa Amerley said her mother insists the decision is in line with custom.
She says her elder sister who was in SHS was forced out of school under similar circumstances and married to a man 17 years older than her.
She is calling on government to intervene or she will have no option than to kill herself.
The girl claims she has already rejected a mobile phone gift from the man.
