Fight Over Mushroom Turns Fatal

A fight by two men over the ownership of mushroom (domo) has resulted in the death of one of them, while the other is in critical condition at the Oda Government Hospital.

The deceased, whose body has been deposited at the same hospital for autopsy, has been identified as 64-year-old Kwadwo Nimo, while the injured, who sustained deep machete wounds on the forehead and his arms and legs, is known as Kwasi Nyamekye, aka Kwasi K.K., 50.

Nimo and Nyamekye, both farmers and natives of Akyem Anamase in the Birim South District in the Eastern Region, engaged in the battle of life and death in the bush at a hamlet called Adiemra, near Akyem Kokobeng.

Fight

According to the Oda Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Mohammed Issah Cantona, Nyamekye went to the farm around 11 a.m. last Wednesday to wait for the owner of the farm to help him break his cocoa pods.

While waiting for his master, Nyamekye decided to pick mushroom from a palm tree that had been left to rot after being tapped for palm wine.

While Nyamekye was picking the mushroom, Nimo emerged with a sharp machete and questioned him as to who had authorised him to pick the mushroom.

Sensing danger that Nimo, who was very furious, might inflict machete wounds on him, Nyamekye took to his heels, with Nimo pursuing him.

When Nimo caught up with Nyamekye, he inflicted deep machete wounds on the latter’s forehead, arms and legs.

Retaliation

Nyamekye also retaliated by inflicting machete wounds on Nimo, who fell to the ground.

Nyamekye’s wailing for help attracted the complainant in the case, Mr Yaw Dankwah, who met Nyamekye walking with difficulty towards the road linking Akyem Kokobeng  and Asantemang, bleeding profusely from his wounds

When Mr Dankwah asked him what had happened to him, Nyamekye replied that Nimo had attempted to murder him.

Mr Dankwah took Nyamekye to the Akyem Manso Police Station to lodge a complaint, where he was given a medical form to seek treatment at the Oda Government Hospital and he was admitted.

The complainant and the police went to the crime scene, where they found Nimo’s dead body in a pool of blood.

The body has been deposited at the Oda Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, Nyamekye has regained consciousness and is under a 24-hour police guard at the hospital.
