Electricity Tariffs Go up By 600% In 3 Years

This is shocking but true. Over the last three years electricity tariffs have shot up by as much as 600 percent for some consumers.

For some consumers the increase could even exceed 1000 percent. Checks by The insight revealed that one particular consumer who was paying GH300.00 (three hundred Ghana cedi) per month for electricity before the power crisis now pays GHC 1000 (One thousand cedis) per month.

This represents an increase of six hundred percent. However if the power crisis is taken into account, this consumer can only be consuming one third of what is used before the crisis.

This means that the real increase is from GHC 100 (One hundred Ghana cedis) per month. The real percent increase based on their calculation would therefore be 1800%. Some observers believe that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) are taking advantage of the dumsor to increase tariffs.

Indeed Ghanaians would be completely shocked to realize after the restoration of the 24 hour power supply that their bills have been quadrupled. The next line of agitation over electricity will most definitely hinge on cost.
