Kwadjo Appiah, a 27-year-old unemployed man who used an online market platform, Tonaton.com, to defraud a businessman of GH¢90,000, has been arrested by the police.
He was reported to have used the platform to advertise a vehicle for sale, and later swindled his victim.
His accomplices, said to be on the run and are being sought for by the police, are Prince Kwabena Amaning and Alex Boakye also known as “Old man”.
The Odorkor District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Abraham Aquaye, told The Ghanaian Times that on April 24, the complainant Richard Kusi, saw a Toyota Highlander 2013 model posted on Tonaton.com advertising platform for sale.
He said Mr. Kusi called the number posted on the advert and the suspect told him he was at Odorkor and gave the price as GH¢90,000.
The Commander said, Appiah met Kusi at Odorkor and told him that the car was parked at Michel Camp, and added that the owner of the car was on admission at a hospital.
He said Kusi was taken to the hospital where he met Alex who was on a sick bed, was paid the GH¢90,000 after which they (Appiah and Alex) gave him a fake document and the car key.
The Commander said, Appiah thereafter issued Kusi a receipt for the amount paid.
Chief Supt Aquaye said, the suspects and Kusi drove in a car to where the car Kusi paid for, was parked.
He said while there Kusi tried to start the car but it could not start, and then the suspects jumped on to a waiting motorbike and absconded.
It was when the real owner came to where the car was parked, that Kusi realised that he had been defrauded.
He then reported the matter to the police and during investigations, Appiah was arrested and he mentioned his accomplices.
