A former employee of the Community Policing Unit (CPU), Kwabena Kwarteng, alias Mataata, has been arrested for possessing a submachine gun with 21 rounds of ammunition.

He was apprehended with the weapon by a police patrol team at Tafo Zongo, a suburb of Kumasi.

Arrest
Briefing journalists in Kumasi yesterday, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Ampofo Duku, said around 10:30 p.m. on May 26, this year, while on patrol duty, the team came across the suspect on an unlicensed motorbike and carrying a black bag.

Suspecting that the bag might contain some contraband goods, he said, the team stopped Kwarteng and searched the bag.

Mr Duku said a “Kettle Sub 2000” rifle with 19 rounds of 40mm ammunition was found in the bag.

He said when Kwarteng’s house was searched at Old Tafo Zongo, two rounds of the same ammunition were found, together with a pair of military camouflage trousers and five mobile phones.

Suspicion
According to Mr Duku, the police believed that the suspect might have used the gun to commit some crimes in the metropolis and appealed to the public who might have fallen victim to his acts to assist the police in their investigations.
