KMA Prepares For Disaster

Following promptings by the Ghana Meteorological Services (GMS) of expected heavy downpour in the coming days, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has been compelled to institute a Metro Disaster Rapid Response Team (MDRRT) to be on standby to deal with any imminent disaster in the Kumasi Metropolis.

A statement signed by the Public Relation Officer of the KMA, Mr. Godwin Okumah Nyame, said the MDRRT which was formed at an emergency meeting of the Metro Security Council (METSEC), comprises of the Ghana Fire Service (GNFS), the Military, the Police Service, The National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Ambulance Service to deal with cases that will erupt as the down pour intensifies.

The KMA said it has taken a cue from the torrential down pour which led to heavy flooding and resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties in the Greater Accra Region and put in place contingency measures to protect lives and properties.

The KMA urged residents to relay relevant information to the Rapid Disaster Response Team to deal with any disaster in the metropolis through the following hotline telephone numbers -0209999599, 0241905656, 05482986, 0548298653 and 0244666456.

The KMA Mayor also reminded the public that the Assembly’s bye-laws which prohibit littering in the metropolis is still in force and cautioned the public to desist from throwing garbage into gutters and drains to avoid choking waterways, thereby resulting in flooding. “Members of the public are entreated to desilt gutters in their surroundings to help prevent flooding”, the statement added.
