Work on the Dansoman Estate Sewerage System in Accra would be completed by the end of November this year, the Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Nii Lante Vanderpuije has said.

Mr. Vanderpuije said a contract sum of US$17,992,270.84 was signed in August 2014 between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and China Henan International Cooperation Group Company for the rehabilitation and extension works of sewerage networks.

The Deputy Minister said these yesterday when he appeared in Parliament to answer questions from Members of the House.

He stated that the contract included cleaning and changing of sewer lines in the Zodiac Area (Banana Lane, through the Dansoman Post Office area, First Light to 2nd Anege Link), Nii Mampong Okai Area (Datus School Community) and Shiabu.

“In the Dansoman area 2.8 kilometres of sewer lines have been replaced and 13 kilometres of sewer have been cleaned. The expected completion date of the project is November 30,” Mr. Vanderpuye said.

The Deputy Minister added that maintenance equipment for sustainable operation and maintenance of the sewerage system would be procured and added that “there is the intention to undertake further training of sewerage staff on the operation and maintenance of the equipment and the system.”

The Deputy Minister explained that the Dansoman Estates Sewerage System was ceded to AMA under the Accra Sewerage Improvement Project (ASIP) by the State Housing Company in 2007 and financed by the African Development Bank with funding support of US$68,000,000.

He said under the project, sewerage system “is to be rehabilitated and extended to non-sewerage areas close to the sewerage system.”

The ASIP rehabilitation and Extension of existing sewerage network covers Dansoman Estates, Jamestown, Accra Central, Ministries area, Labone Civil Servants Estates, Achimota School and its environs.

Other areas are University of Ghana main campus and Junior Staff Quarters area, Presbyterian Boys Secondary, University of Professional Studies and its environs in Accra.

Responding to other questions, Mr. Vanderpuye said LESDEP would be realigned to the Local Economic Development Policy and make the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies play a lead role in its implementation.

He added that LESDEP was being reviewed to determine its impact and to make it more responsive to the current skills-demand of the youth.
