Sports Festival Slated For September

The Volta Region Sports Festival is to stage a comeback in September this year in a bid to discover and develop sporting talents for Region and country following its dormancy over the years. "All is set for the Sports Festival this year after several years of absence on the Region's Sports calendar", Mr Gabriel Yao Missodey, Volta Regional Sports Development Officer told the GNA Sports in Ho on Monday. Mr Missodey said the idea is to develop all disciplines of sports from the grassroots and place the Region back to its right position in sporting activities in the country. He said the one week event, which would span from the 6th to 13th September would feature participants from all the administrative Districts of the Region. Mr Missodey said all the districts are expected to present soccer teams for the Under-15 years in both male and female and teams for handball, volleyball, athletics and tennis events. He said there trophies and certificates would be presented to winners from the various disciplines and called for financial and material support from stakeholders in and outside the Region to reward outstanding performers. The Regional Organiser said as a prelude to the Festival, the District Sports Councils in the Region would soon be commissioned before the launch of the Festival to ensure the success of the initiative. Mr Missodey appealed to entrepreneurs in sports and other stakeholders to support the Festival in cash and kind and consider forming sporting clubs to help develop the budding talents from the Region.
