Energy Critical To Middle Income Agenda

THE Minister of Energy, Dr. Joe Oteng-Adjei, has stated that for Ghana to achieve the projected Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $1,000 per capita by 2020, its total energy requirement must grow significantly. According to him, the challenge is to increase the energy supplies in a sustainable manner and also expand the energy infrastructure in order to achieve the development targets. The Minister revealed this at a 2-day training programme on good corporate governance for Board of Directors of the Agencies under the Ministry of Energy last Friday. The objective of the programme was to sensitize members of the various Boards about their specific roles in the organizations to which they had been appointed. According to him, the Revised National Energy Policy and the Medium-term Development Strategy of the Ministry will help develop an energy economy that will ensure reliable supply of high quality energy services for all sectors of the Ghanaian economy. Dr. Oteng-Adjei expressed concerns about previous unhealthy relationships between some Board members and their top management staff, adding As members of the Board, you are expected to concentrate on the strategic issues of your respective organizations and to fashion out the appropriate policy direction in order to address these needs. He also assured the participants that the training program will provide an informally, interactive platform for them to improve their overall performance. The Deputy Rector of GIMPA, Lawrence Kannae, confirmed that the programme was an integral part of the economic growth of the country, adding it is critical for the nation to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
