A two-week literacy clinic, designed to sharpen the reading skills of more than 100 pupils has opened at Appolonia in the Kpone-Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region.
Organized by Literacy For Life, a non-governmental organisation in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, the objective of the clinic was to help in bridging the literacy gap between urban and rural children as well as improve the level of education in deprived areas.
Addressing the participants at the opening ceremony, Mrs. Sheila Osei-Boakye, Chief Executive of Literacy For Change, stressed the commitment of the Foundation towards contribution to the provision of quality education for children, especially in deprived areas.
She noted that it was unfair for children from deprived areas who lack teaching and learning facilities that were available in urban schools to compete with children from urban areas in examinations, adding that efforts needed to be made to safe rural children from such difficulty.
Mr. Timothy Mensah, Assemblyman for the area, for his part, was confident the literacy camp would greatly boost the reading skills of the children and similarly encourage parents to enroll children in school.
