Thousands of supporters and sympathizers of both the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), poured onto the principal streets of the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, last Saturday, to unanimously endorse the candidature of Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, as their next Member of Parliament (MP).

The peaceful health walk, which coincided with her birthday, saw Obuobia, presenting items to over one hundred and fifty disabled persons in the community. The event, almost turned into joint political rally by the NPP and NDC supporters to prove their solidarity and loyalty to “OB” as she is affectionately called.

The thick crowd of supporters and well-wishers from all walks of life, all dressed in the customized T-shirts of “OB” with her picture on it, comprised the youth, elderly and visibly weak old-men and women, as well as some physically challenged persons, took part in the health walk.

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service, had a difficult time controlling the crowd with its accompanying vehicular traffic which the exercise brought during the over 3-kilometre-long health walk, that lasted for about two and half hours.

Instead of receiving gifts on her birthday, “OB” rather presented over 50 wheel chairs, 50 crutches, 50 white canes and other items to the physically challenged, and the visually impaired in the community, as part of her ongoing non-partisan humanitarian project in the community.
Speaking to journalists after the donation, Madam Obuobia said, “I don’t have to be in Parliament to help my people, but I am promising to share the little including, my talent to the betterment of the community, irrespective of one’s political affiliation”.
The Executive Director of ‘Obuobia Foundation’ told The Herald that, her focus has always been to use her talent, resources and connections to help humanity especially, those around her, since “charity begins from home”.

Madam Obuobia was emphatic, her decision to enter parliament is to harness everybody as a “collective effort to turn lives around to make the society a better place to live in”.

The President of the Centre for Employment of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Alex Tetteh, together with the beneficiaries, who were present to receive the items, thanked the Obuobia Foundation for the offer.

Speakers after speakers, commended Madam Obuobia for her contribution towards the development of the area by identifying and assisting the less privilege in the community.

Some prominent personalities, who came to throw their support behind Madam Obuobia throughout the event included; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Micro-finance and Small Loans Center (MASLOC), Christine Sedina Attionu-Tamakloe, the Acting Deputy Executive Director of National Service Secretariat, Sophia Akuaku, Presidential Staffer, Sam Dzata George, among others.

The ‘Obuobia Foundation’, since its establishment few years ago, has been at the forefront of many developmental projects in the community including, partnering the Ga-South Municipality to make living in the community worthwhile.

Madam Obuobia’s works, has been in the areas of education, healthcare, electrification, building bridges, among others.
She has also provided water, relief items and educational support to the brilliant, but needy school children in the Constituency. For instance, she has given scholarship to 10 brilliant, but needy students in second cycle and tertiary institutions.

At the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), she distributed over two thousand five-hundred (2,500) mathematical sets to all eighty-seven public and private schools candidates who sat for the exams.

“OB” recently intervened to have two dilapidated footbridges at Mallam, which have become a deathtrap to students and residents of Borla Road, rehabilitated, shortly after media reports.
Earlier, a major gutter around New Gbawe and Old-Barrier, was also re-constructed to save the lives of pupils of Blessed Generation International School.

A 2-kilometer Mandela to Ashbread community road, which was awarded to a contractor on July 30, will see to the construction of drains to control flood situations, that besiege the community during raining seasons and the spillage of the Weija Dam.
The poor road, had been the bane of many residents, reporting damaged vehicles.

Madam Oboubia, through her Foundation earlier this year, donated a 17000-litre water tank to the people of Wiaboma, and other communities as temporal solution to address their perennial water problem.

The donation, also included ten (10) pieces of metal chairs for use in the chiefs’ palace, airs and five (5) Philips branded street lights to enhance the security in the community, after fruitless appeal by residents to authorities, as well as past and present sitting Member of Parliament (MPs).
