Sophia Ackuaku Picks Forms To Contest Obom-Domeabra Constituency

A deputy Director at the National Service Secretariat, Sophia Karen Ackuaku, Thursday, ended all doubts about her desire to represent the people of Obom-Domeabra in the 2017 parliament when she picked nomination forms to contest the impending National Democratic Congress primaries.

Bubbling with confidence of annexing the NDC Obom-Domeabra parliamentary candidate slot, Madam Ackuaku quietly picked the forms without the usual media blitz and fanfare that usually characterize such activities.

Speaking to The aL-hAJJ in an interview, the aspiring parliamentary candidate, who was NDC’s 2012 parliamentary candidate in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, stated that her decision to represent the people of Obom-Domeabra was born out of her desire to serve humanity and help the downtrodden.

She explained that “I decided to contest Obom-Domeabra because I think that is where I’m currently needed. I know that constituency very well…my grandfather has a village there called Ackuakukope and I know the level of deprivation there. I have seen it myself and now I think it is time to serve my people with the little experience I have acquired over the years in public service.”

“Many people have asked why I’m not contesting Dome-Kwabenya because looking at the work I’ve done there and my performance in the 2012 elections, I can win the seat for the NDC in 2016…I believe I can win Dome-Kwabenya for NDC but there comes a time where you have to weigh where your impacts will be felt most, and I firmly believe that the people of Obom-Domeabra needs me,” she explained.

Madam Ackuaku opined that from her interaction with the constituents and the number of people who have called on her to contest, it was clear the people of Obom-Domeabra are looking for a dynamic, humble, approachable, development oriented modern leader who will leave behind concrete legacies for future generations, asserting “that time and that leader has come.”

She appealed for unity and love towards all, saying “this is a family contest and after the contest, all of us would have to come under the umbrella to campaign and retain the seat for NDC and also ensure that President Mahama wins the 2016 elections.”

The ruling NDC has fixed Saturday, November 7, 2015, as the date the party will go to the polls to elect or endorse its Flagbearer and Parliamentary candidates for next year’s General Elections.

Per the modalities for the party’s upcoming parliamentary and presidential primaries, nominations will open on the 27th August and close on 10th September.

The ruling party has also decided that, all registered members will have the opportunity to exercise their franchise, thereby scrapping the Electoral College that earlier existed.

Addressing a news conference in Accra, General Secretary for the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, revealed that filing fees for male Parliamentary aspirants has been pegged at GHC 10,000, whiles women and the physically challenged are expected to pay GHC 5,000.

Potential aspirants whose names have been bandied in the media and on social media have since last week Thursday started picking nomination forms.

One of such candidate who was rumored to be gearing up to contest Obom-Domeabra constituency primary, Sophia Karen Ackuaku, indeed picked nomination form last Thursday to stake claim to the seat which is currently being occupied by Daoud Anum Yemoh.
