International Community Backs NPPs Call For New Voters Register

Former chairman of the opposition new patriotic party, Peter Mac Manu says the partys quest for a new voters register for the 2016 general elections is receiving overwhelming support from the international community. The NPP is lobbying foreign presidents and international bodies to back their case for a new register. The Electoral Commission has asked parties to put forward proposals on the register by the 22nd of September. Mac Manu in an interview with Joynews said foreign bodies the party has petitioned over the matter are supportive of their position that a new register is ideal for the elections. I have spoken to majority of them and the response is positive because they believe the peace of Ghana cannot be compromised he added. Mac Manu underscored the need for the EC to win back the trust of Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 general elections for a peaceful poll. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has charged the EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei to show commitment to ensuring credible elections in the country by first investigating role played by the commissions IT department in the alleged smuggling of foreign names into the electoral register. She is convinced there would be no foreign names on the electoral roll without collusion. Mrs. Ekuful wants the Commission to look within and eliminate staff that may be compromised.
