Stop Politicizing District Assembly Elections

The Assembly member-elect in the just ended district assembly elections for the Klowe Koonaa Electoral Area, Robert Okoe Odiko has called for the maintenance of non-partisan nature of district assembly elections to reduce the polarization of developmental issues.

According to him, the district assembly concept is all about development; therefore, partisan politics should be out of it to allow competent and dedicated people to mobilize the grassroots support for development.

He made this known to the Daily Heritage after he was declared the winner for the second time in a row when he polled a total of 1,105 votes to beat his competitor in a two-horse race. His opponent polled 424 votes.

Mr. Odiko believes that partisan politics at that level would erode the objective of the district assembly concept and therefore should not be encouraged.

“Partisan politics is in assembly member elections, I saw that during our campaign time where some candidates were declared their party affiliations to get votes. We the assembly members should desist from this act. That is not how the system works, we assembly members only fight for development for our electoral areas,” he warned.

He said since assembly members are not paid, it is purely a sacrificial job that needs competent and dedicated people who have the development of the society at heart and not those who want to project their political parties.

“Four years ago, I won by six votes. This time, the difference was 681, which means that the constituents have really seen the work I have done. I will continue to do my best, because they have voted for me to come and work. I assure them of my support, but they must continue to support me as they use to do,” Mr. Odiko noted.

He told the paper that the work he did in the last four years was the reward he got in the election and thanked all who supported him to emerge victorious in the contest.
