A Nigerian car dealer on Thursday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a contractor of GHC40,000 under the pretext of providing him with a vehicle. Kinsley Onyebuchi Oyaka, who appeared before the court following a bench warrant, has denied the charge. The Court presided over by Ms Afia Kumador rescinded the bench warrant and admitted him to bail in the sum of GHC 70,000 cedis with two sureties, one to be justified. Oyaka is expected to reappear on October 6. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Adjei, said the complainant, Mr K. Johnson is a contractor at Kasoa. On July 31, last year, Mr Johnson saw a Nissan vehicle at Oyaka�s garage and expressed interest in buying it. ASP Adjei said Mr Johnson therefore contacted Oyaka, who gave the price of the vehicle as GH 40,000 cedis and promised to release the vehicle if the complainant made a part payment. Prosecution said Mr Johnson paid GHC 34,000 but Oyaka failed to release the vehicle as promised. ASP Adjei said several efforts by the complainant to collect the vehicle or a refund of his money had been fruitless. On March 16, this year, Oyaka was picked up by the Police and in his caution statement prosecution said Oyaka admitted collecting the money and explained that he was going through some difficulties and could not deliver the vehicle to the complainant as promised. Oyaka therefore pleaded with the Police to give him two weeks to refund the money but he refunded only GH 5,000 cedis.
