Two Hour Rains Submerge Parts Of Koforidua

A near two-hour downpour Wednesday exposed the rather poor drainage system in parts of the Koforidua municipality as houses and shops get submerged in water.

Areas such as Nsukwao and Zongo were the worst affected and residents and shop owners spent hours to clear pools of water that entered their rooms and shops.

The rains, which started at about 3:10pm and subsided just about 4pm, also caused a heavy gridlock on roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) of Koforidua.

The congestion, uncharacteristic of Koforidua, had motorists particularly commercial drivers who were moving in and out of the CBD in the peak hour of the evening spending about 30 minutes on trips that usually took between 7 to 10 minutes.

Some residents expressed concern about the situation, and attributed it to the fact that the drains were too small and choked to receive the volumes of water that gushed into them.

At about 5:30p.m however, the floods had receded and shop owners and residents who were affected were counting their loss.
