Ghana Can Borrow Money To Compile New Voters Register Ex Prez Kuffour

Ex President John Agyekum Kuffour has backed calls for a new voters register insisting that everything possible must be done to change the electoral album no matter what the cost may be to the state.
According to him, even if Ghana will have to borrow money to facilitate the compilation of a new register, that must be done to ensure that the credibility of the 2016 election is not compromised, adding that the cost of not having a credible election cannot be wished away.

The ex President made these remarks when pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance paid a courtesy call on him at his residence to convince him to add his voice to the campaign for a new register ahead of the 2016 general elections. The group has long held the position that the current register is bloated.

Former President Kuffour pleaded with the EC to take a step back and assess the various objections raised about the faulty nature of the current register, and not dismiss the various claims made.

“I’m with you entirely on this issue I believe the EC should not give excuses but get a new register compiled. I hope the Chairperson starts her tenure on a clean slate and that will command credibility and respect across board. Ghanaians are known to be peaceful people, but if we should move on a faulty system, we’ll never know where the spark will come from.

“A new register must be compiled and this time it should contain only the citizens as captured by our constitution.”

The LMVCA is bent on ensuring the Electoral Commission compiles a new electoral album for the next elections which promises to be keenly contested.

The pressure group in intensifying its campaign yesterday called on the ex President J.J Rawlings and his wife who is the leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) at separate engagements, to explain their position on the voters register to them in order to get the two leaders to support their course.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked for a new voters’ register after it alleged that the old one had been bloated.

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the party, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, alleged that 80,000 foreign nationals had been registered on the current register.

Their concerns pushed the Electoral Commission (EC) to ask for proposals for a possible creation of a new register from various parties and groups.

The EC is expected to analyse the proposals and take a final decision on the matter.
