Ghanaian Ex-Serviceman Decorated By Britain

A-92-year old Ghanaian ex-serviceman, Ex-Lance Corporal Joshua Ennim, has been decorated with a crest known as African Memorial Tribute by the British Royal Military Academy.

The award was in recognition of his participation in the Second World War, which ended in 1945.

Ex-lance Corporal Ennim told the Ghana News Agency in Takoradi that he was decorated with the crest at a ceremony in Sandhust, England, on September16, this year.

He said he was the only African who was decorated with the crest for his bravery.

“I was the only African ex-serviceman decorated with the crest at the ceremony even though there were other troops from the British colonies like Nigeria, Sierra Leone and The Gambia, aside the Gold Coast that took part in the war,” he noted.

The ex-serviceman said he was part of the Gold Coast Fifth Battalion Regiment and admitted that some of the troops died during the hostilities and was very grateful to God for returning home alive despite the risk involved in peacekeeping.

“On battlefield, we mostly patrol our designated territory and sometimes the enemies attack us on tree tops with snipers because it was a jungle war and it was very risky since you did know where you would be attacked,” he said.

He advised the young generation of soldiers to be disciplined and respect instructions, in order to maintain the integrity and high professional standard of the Ghana Armed Forces.
