Can Dumsor End In December?

The power outage which has lasted for more than three years may not end soon.

Indeed over the last two weeks, the situation in Accra appears to have worsened with some communities sometimes being without power for more than 24hours.

Even though the Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor has promised that ‘Dumsor’ will be a thing of the past by the end of December, the future looks bleak.

Already a number of media houses have started a countdown to the end of Dumsor following a pledge by the Minister of Power that he will resign if he is unable to keep his promise.

Very reliable sources in the power sector say that the only way the power outage can end in December is for Government to find a minimum of US$100 million for the purchase of fuel for the thermal generation plants.

If the rationing of power is to be ended up to March next year, the Government will need a minimum of US$300 million.

Already, the Volta River Authority (VRA) owes close to US$1billion on the purchase of fuel.

“The problem with Dumsor is not about the generation capacity but simply the fact that we cannot find the money to buy fuel” said our sources.
