Commercial Drivers Protest Over 'Mahama Kambu'

Workers, students and patients were left stranded this morning when scores of taxi and trotro drivers from eleven stations under the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) embarked on a demonstration.

The drivers are protesting the use of the tricycle also known as “Yellow yellow” or "Mahama Kambu" for commercial purposes.

The drivers, wearing red arm bands drummed and chanted war songs as they paraded the streets of Tamale.

One of the drivers, Salimu Musah in an interview with JOYNEWS’ Martina Bugri said the tricycle are affecting their business.

He explained that most of the passengers preferred that to other commercial vehicles because they claim it is fast.

Salimu Musah added that even though most of the tricycle drivers don’t have license, the police leave them and rather go after taxi and trotro drivers.

He called on the authorities to as a matter of urgency ban the activities of these tricycle operators or face their wrath.

Meanwhile, some workers who were stranded as a result of the protest march according to reports had a hectic time getting transportation to their workplaces.
