Madam Osei Wiredu claims top award at Farmers� Day

Mrs Evelyn Osei Wiredu, a 54-year old mixed farmer, was adjudged the overall Best Farmer for the Kumasi Metropolis at this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration, held at Appiadu in Kumasi. 

The winner, who is the Manageress of Osei Wiredu Farms at Dompoase, took home as her prize an LED Television set, four pieces of cutlasses, five bars of keysoap, one box of weedicide, two knapsack sprayers and a certificate of honour.

Mrs Osei Wiredu started farming some 30 years ago with only 200 birds and can now boast of about 20, 000, a feat achieved through the adoption of best farming practices.

In addition, she has bred a variety of livestock and also produced many kinds of crops to feed the growing population.

The Day is marked by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to honour deserving farmers for their immense contribution to the growth of the agricultural sector.

This year’s celebration had as theme: “Transform Ghana: Invest in Agriculture”, and saw a total of 22 farmers and institutions being rewarded for working assiduously to enhance food security to benefit the people.

Prizes awarded them ranged from mattresses, cutlasses, Wellington boots, knapsack sprayers, bars of key soap to agro-chemicals.

Mr Stephen Asante, the Metropolitan Director of Agriculture, reminded the farmers on the need to embrace new technologies in farming for increased productivity.

He congratulated the award-winners for their hard work, urging them to strive for excellence in their farming activities to sustain their livelihood.

Mr Kojo Bonsu, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), in a speech read on his behalf, said government was committed support farmers with the requisite incentives to improve their work.
