Maame Efua Buckman, an Upper six student of the Ghana International School has provided a mini library for the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Primary C in Accra.

Ms. Buckman who during the school’s summer vacation embarked on a volunteer work at the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Primary School, teaching class three pupils, said her immediate observation and concern throughout the period was the children’s challenge in vocabulary, grammar and their weak command over the English language.

“It became my desire to establish a reading centre or mini library which the school needs to encourage the people to develop an interest in reading which will eventually improve their word power and proficiency in the English language,” She added

Authorities of the school were moved and excited by the new educational facility that will cater for more than 200 children of the school.

“You have started building a dream for these little ones, instilling in them the belief that the sky is the limit. Possibilities are endless when you open the doors to reading… our hearts are filled with gratitude; our hearts are filled with joy,” The headmistress of the school, Madam Susan Boateng said. 

She lauded the initiative by the GIS student and assured, they are committed to ensuring that the facility is put to good use.

The school has over the years appealed to the general public, especially individuals and corporate bodies in the area, to come to their aid to put up a Library for the benefit of the pupils and the community at large.

Ms. Buckman who admitted she chalked this feat with the help of a  classmate explained, “As I embarked on the journey towards this end I realised it was no mean task for me to carry out single handedly so it immediately occurred to me to consult a classmate of mine, Lawrence Agyemang, who I was sure would be interested and supportive of such a venture he embraced the idea and immediately came on board with great ideas and energy, together we solicited for funds and books both new and used from friends and individual schoolmates and institutions”

Handing over the reading centre to the school, Ms. Buckman was full of praise for EPP Bookshop for contributing immensely to the project. She thanked the company’s CEO for supporting the project wholeheartedly.

Building this library according to her “was no mean task as we were confronted with many challenges but with the help of our parents we were able to pull through successfully.”

She advised the pupils to put the facility to prudent use and promised to come back from time to ensure that the library is expanded. The occasion was graced by the Greater Accra regional Manager of Presby Schools, Mrs. Rosemond Amoako Apenteng.
