Rule On Bunkpurugu Chieftaincy Crisis, Parties Appeal

The Jafoak Gate in the Bunkpurugu chieftaincy dispute has called on the Northern Regional House of Chiefs to expedite the ruling on the case to determine who is the legitimate Chief of Bunkpurugu.

Mr Chamba Kombat Kampiitib, Head of the Jafoak Gate in Tamale, who made the call at a press conference in Tamale, said the speedy disposal of the case, which had been at the Northern Regional House of Chiefs for the past eight years, was a logical and rational expectation.

Mr Kampiitib explained that the Bunkpurugu chieftaincy crisis was not a case of communities or tribes fighting against one another but rather two brothers of the same family laying claims to the same skin, with the younger one contesting his older brother, who is currently the chief.

The Jafoak Gate and the Jamong Gate in the Bunkpurugu chieftaincy crisis have been at loggerheads as to who is the legitimate chief of the area, a situation, which sometimes results in violent clashes leading to the loss of lives.

Mr Kampiitib said “the rampant shootings, burning of houses and destruction of life and property has brought to a halt commerce, trade, education and indeed all social activities” in the area adding that women and children continue to live in fear and panic in the area.

He said traditional authorities should endeavor to be more peace makers and avoid being partial when matters of conflict were being dealt with saying; “In searching for peace, leaders need to crucify their parochial and narrow interests and seek the welfare of the larger society”.
