Soldier, Policeman Arrested For Robbery

A soldier, a policeman and their two accomplices have been arrested for their alleged involvement in robbery.

The soldier, identified as Corporal Yeboah Asante, and the policeman, whose name has been given as Constable Samuel Asamoah, are said to have trailed their victim from a bank to his house at Madina.

The two other suspects arrested in connection with the case are Richard Nutornutsi, 30, the driver of the taxicab used for the robbery, and Jerry Somi, 26, a musician.

Victim trailed from bank

Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, the Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Timothy Y. Bonga, said Asamoah and Asante, who were in military and police uniforms, monitored their victim when he went to withdraw money from a bank and followed him to his house.

He said the four suspects, who were in a taxi, accosted the victim at the entrance of his house and informed him that he was under arrest for engaging in fraud.

They then asked him to accompany them to Burma Camp for interrogation and to assist with further investigations.

“Asamoah and Asante then forced the complainant into the Opel Corsa taxicab, with registration number GW 6449 -15,” he said.

Suspects abandoned victim

While they were in the taxi with the victim, Mr Bonga said, the suspects forcibly collected GHc1,860 and an Iphone Five mobile phone from the victim.

He said when they had driven to a point, they abandoned the victim, after which they sped off.

The victim later lodged a complaint with the police, who subsequently arrested the four suspects.

According to Mr Bonga, the suspects, during interrogation, admitted committing the offence.

In the course of their investigations, the police also found that Asamoah was on interdiction for committing a similar offence.

Seven arrested in connection with confusion at Chorkor

In a related development, the Accra Regional Police Command announced that the police had arrested seven persons in connection with the recent disturbances at a press conference organised by Mr Ato Quarshie, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), at Chorkor in the Ablekuma South Constituency during the first week of December 2015.

The names of the suspects were given as Collins Kofi Asante, a businessman; Abdul Rashid Adjei Apetor, alias One Face; Samuel Koetey Neequaye, Thomas Opoku and Moses Annorban, all drivers.

The others are Theophilus Adusu Ofosu, a fisherman, and Robert Quaye, alias Stopper, a boxer.

Mr Bonga told journalists that investigations had revealed that Asante had been responsible for organising the people who disrupted the press conference and disturbed the public peace.

The mob is said to have damaged 35 plastic chairs, two canopies, an electric amplifier and a power generating set, all valued at GHc1,525.
