A joint exercise by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the Apam District of the Central Region during the festive season helped to reduce road carnage on the Accra-Cape Coast highway.

The Apam jurisdiction of the highway recorded an accident during the entire Christmas and New Year festivities with no single death recorded.

The feat was made possible due to a sensitization drive embarked upon by personnel of the GPS led by Chief Inspector Salomey Nunoo of the Apam District Police and Mr. Stephen Anokye, Head of the Central Region Road Safety Commission.

The exercise which commenced prior to the Christmas festivities saw personnel of the two bodies inspecting fire extinguishers, triangles, spare tires, worn-out tires, expired tires as well as checking the speed of drivers.

The team used the exercise to sensitize both drivers and passengers alike on their roles to ensure accident free before, during and after the festivities.

Chief Inspector Nunoo told NewsGhana.com the exercise would continue after the New Year to ensure road accidents on the highway was if not totally eliminated, minimized.

The major cause of road accidents in Ghana and other West African countries has largely been attributed to human errors.

The Chief Inspector advised passengers to report any act of reckless driving to the police as well as urged drivers to observe all the rules of defensive driving to ensure their safety as well as that of other road users.

Official statistics from the NRSC indicates that the region, since 2012, has seen a reduction in accidents mainly on the highway. It recorded a total of 1,279 in 2012, 1,152 in 2013 and 1073 in 2014.
