Del Bosque Confirms Inaki Williams Among Euro 2016 Options

The reigning European champions are keeping tabs on the Ghana target for a place at Euro 2016.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque is considering Athletic Bilbao prodigy and Ghana target Inaki Williams for the 2016 Uefa European Championship in France, Goal can confirm.

The 21-year-old striker, with six La Liga goals this season, has been in impressive form since bursting onto the stage in the 2014-2015 season, grabbing global attention last November after netting five times in three matches within a span of eight days.

On Tuesday, Goal ran a story which had the vice president of Ghana Football Association George Afriyie confirm talks with the youngster alongside two others, in view of pledging their international future to the Black Stars.

“The FA is monitoring a lot of players,” Afriyie had told Atinka FM. “The FA is talking to Thomas Partey, Inaki and another player from Germany.”

Afriyie’s comments come two months after confirmations of Ghana’s interest in the Spain under-21 forward by FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi and Black Stars coach Avram Grant.

However, addressing a question on the possible striking options available for La Roja’s final 23-man squad for Euro 2016 in June/July in an interview with Goal, Del Bosque mentioned the Basque-born is among his list of candidates.

“There’s also Inaki Williams at Athletic, whom we consider more of a striker than a wing player,” Del Bosque said, in addition to the mention of Alvaro Morata, Iago Aspas, PacoAlcacer, Diego Costa, Imanol Agirretxe, Borja Baston, Lucas Perez and Aritz Aduriz.

“He has great speed and is playing with the Spain under-21s. All of them are in my head and we will call on the ones we think are the most convenient. We will try to bring the best.”

Born to a Ghanaian father and a Liberian mother in Spain, Williams made his first appearance for his country of birth against Norway in the U-21 category last March.

However, the striker has said that he “feels Spanish”.
