Mahamas Refusal To Speak Again On Gitmo 2 Saga A Smart Move Security Expert

Security Expert, David Agbee has described as a smart move, President John Mahama’s decision not to comment on the controversial Gitmo saga in Parliament.

According to him, the issue as contentious as it is would have been resurrected if the President touched on the matter.

President John Mahama while delivering the State of the Nation address on Thursday, refused to make further statements on the case in which his government accepted and is housing two ex Guatanamo Bay detainees following an agreement between Ghana and the US government.

The two are Khalid Mohammed Salih al-Dhuby and Mahmmoud Omar Mohammed Bin Atef.

The president said in Parliament that because the Foreign Affairs Minister Hannah Tetteh had already briefed Parliament on the matter just a week ago, it was unnecessary to revisit the issue.

Minority Members of Parliament were ‘mad’  and disappointed at the Minister as she failed to open up when she appeared before the House to answer questions over the two terrorist suspects.  According to her, she was and is still not privy to the discussions that have gone on between President Mahama and the US Government.

Her invitation to the August House was spurred by concerns from Members from both sides of the legislature over the Gitmo detainees’ acceptance into the country without their knowledge.

Following the Foreign Minister’s disclosure of limited information, Members of Parliament were expecting the President to speak to the issue, but he let them down.

But speaking to Kasapa News, David Agbee who is Executive Director of the Ghana Institute of Governance and Leadership stated that President Mahama couldn’t have made a mistake of raking the issues that seem to have gone to rest.

He said Ghanaians have no option than to accept the fact that the two ex-detainees are here to stay with us at least for the next two years, as President Mahama can’t alter the agreement he entered with the US government.

“We’ll pay dearly if we send the two terrorists’ suspects out of the country as America, a country that we so much depend on will immediately cease the huge financial support it gives Ghana annually”.
