The Ghana Association of Traders Association’s (GUTA) strike against, what they call excessive taxes, has entered the third day with shops in the Central business District and the Makola Market still closed.
When the Ghana News Agency interacted with some traders at the market, on Wednesday, stated that they were still on strike as GUTA had directed, and expressed the hope that the authorities would do something about the high increase in tariffs.
Madam Mary Ackom said the increment in taxes had caused poor sales because many customers complained that their wares were expensive.
A trader thus appealed to the Government to help rectify the situation saying: “We need peace in the country because the hardships in the country can lead to chaos”.
GUTA, the Food and Beverages Association, Institute of Freight Forwarders and other unions have directed their members to close their shops as part of a series of actions lined up to protest against increased level of taxes, such as Stamp tax and excise duties.
