Porter Commits Suicide At Kantamanto Market

A porteris alleged to have committed suicide yesterday morning in the shed of a trader at the Kantamanto Market.

The man who was later identified only as Akoto is suspected to be about 45 years old.

The Accra Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Afia Tenge, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the Railways Police received information about a man’s body found hanging at the Kantamanto Market at about 6 a.m. on Thursday.

No foul play suspected

She said the police personnel who were despatched to the scene found a man in a green Polo T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans shorts hanging on a beam in one of the sheds in the market.

“We have so far ruled out any form of foul play as no marks of assault were seen on the body after careful examination,” Mrs Tenge said.

According to her, police investigations later revealed that Akoto had been staying with a woman who described herself as a lover of the deceased when she was contacted.

The woman, Mrs Tenge said, gave her name to the police as Lydia Darko and claimed she was in a relationship with him for four months.

She, however, said Akoto packed out of her house about two months ago despite her persistent plea for him to consider his decision.

Mrs Tenge said Lydia claimed she had since not heard from her lover until she was called and informed about his death.

She could not help the police with the full name of her lover and said she did not know his hometown or any of his relations.

The body, she said, had been deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy.
