Ghana National Association of Driving Schools (GNADS) on Wednesday attributed the increase in road carnage to lack of knowledge and poor human development.

According to the Association, education for drivers was the best foundation to minimise road accidents in the country.

Reverend Erasmus Amoakwah Addo, National President of GNADS, who disclosed this during the launch of their Annual Week celebration in Accra, said until we give sound education to the drivers, the carnage on the road would not cease.

 “If we failed to give the best foundation to our drivers…we will continue to witness such horrors as was seen on the Kintampo road and other places which is costing government millions of Cedis in terms of medical supplies and rehabilitation of accident victims,” he warned.

He said accredited driving schools were there to offer the best service to the public and stressed on the need to adequately prepare the drivers through the various stages of their profession to minimise supervision and enforcement.

The week-long celebration is on the theme, “Educate Now to Safe Life”.

Rev. Amoakwah Addo said driving was like any other profession, which needed proper training to change the mind-set of the would-be drivers before they sat behind their wheels.

He said the Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2180), 2012, mandates all would-be drivers to show evidence of having gone through 48 hours of training from a recognised training institution, yet, “we are still experiencing a situation where students come to us only to say, ‘I know how to drive  therefore only register me for my license’.”

He said that position contradicts the lay down provision of the L.I. 2180 and called on the authorities to ensure that the old system of producing drivers ceased.

He therefore called on non-members to join the Association so that they could have a strong voice.

Mr Francis Agbozo, National Secretary of GNADS, said there would be radio talks, education at the Mosques and Churches, and floats on the principal streets of Accra from Friday, March 18 to March 23, 2016 to climax the celebration.

He announced that they would be visiting some basic schools in Accra, to educate them on road signs and also correct the wrong doctrines inculcated in the children.
