Nkwanta South NPP Elects Parliamentary Candidate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nkwanta South Constituency in the Volta Region has elected by acclamation an educationist, Mr Cephas Edusei, to contest the parliamentary election in the constituency on behalf of the party in November.

He was overwhelmingly endorsed at the party’s primary on Saturday. He polled 410 yes out of 582 votes from 94 polling stations out of 103. This was after the withdrawal of another contestant, Mr Wisdom Wagya, from the race days before the election.

The Nkwanta South primary to elect a parliamentary candidate was still outstanding for the two major parties in the constituency, the NDC and the NPP, each claiming that it was a strategic spot for it.

The Constituency Secretary, Mr John Turkson, expressed the hope the party would produce a parliamentarian from the constituency and that all was to intensify the campaign for the candidate to be accepted in the constituency.

A claim was that they were waiting for the appointment of a new District Chief Executive after the murder of the substantive executive, Mr Peter Kenyensu, in a gunshot insident at his residence last year, and that the appointment of a new DCE could influence the selection of a Member of Parliament for the area.

The Nkwanta South primary had been delayed for unforeseen intra party misunderstanding at the constituency level but the party was able to resolve all differences to enable it to roll out its strategic plans for the November elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is yet to conduct its primary, had also claimed the delay to be strategic.

It will be recalled that the NPP conducted nationwide parliamentary primaries on June 15 last year but the Nkwanta South Constituency could not participate in them due to unforeseen intra-party differences.
