Over 1000 Prisoners Freed

The Centenary celebration of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has brought reprieve to a total of One Thousand and Twenty One (1,021) prisoners based on the criteria laid down by the Prisons Service Council. A statement issued and signed by Minister for the Interior, Hon. Cletus Avoka, said the granting of this amnesty is in accordance with the powers conferred on the President, by Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution. The statement said, the prisoners granted amnesty include 953 first offenders who have served at least half of their sentence; 54 seriously ill prisoners recommended by the Regional Medical Board, 9 Prisoners aged 70 years and over, who were also recommended by the Regional Medical Board, and 5 Nursing Mothers who have shown remorse. The statement further indicated that 6 others who have been on death row and who have served for 10 years and above, have had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
