Government has been asked to implement to the full, the education rights of the physically challenged as captured in the disability law. Mr Edwin Avornyo, Volta Regional Secretary of the National Association of Physically Challenged, noted that the disabled continued to pay academic facility user fees at all levels of education despite existence of the law. He was speaking at a sensitization seminar on the 2006 disability law at Akatsi in the Volta Region. Mr. Avornyo said the disabled were not required to pay fees in any public institution of learning, which could also not refuse them admission because of their disability once they qualified and there was vacancy. He identified the low literacy rate among the disables as the reason for their inability to demand their rights and advised that disabled children enrolled in school to reverse the trend. Mr. Avornyo suggested the inclusion of the 2006 disability law in the curricula of the security, teacher, health and social welfare training schools to enable products appreciate the rights and institutions created to support the physically challenged. Mr. Avornyo said the handling of the disabled by personnel in these critical sectors was appalling because of their lack of knowledge about the law.
