Lack of guarantors for prospective registrants who don’t have any form of identification, has slowed down the registration process in some of the designated centers for the ongoing Limited Voters’ Registration Exercise in the New Juaben Municipality.

At most of the centres, there were no long queues and the qualified voters who wanted to get their names in the electoral roll to enable them to vote in the 2016 and subsequent election, emerged one by one at the centres on the first and second days of the exercise.

The St Peter’s Anglican Primary School Registration Center at Betom, a suburb of Koforidua, had registered13 people on the first day of the limited voter registration exercise.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the center the second day eight people had registered as at 10:13 am, with five people in the queue waiting to go through the process.

Information gathered by the GNA indicated that, most of the eligible registrants who came to the center without any form of identification and could not also produce any guarantors were turn away by the registration officials.

At the Methodist Primary School Registration Center, in the School Town Electoral Area, as at 10:45 am on the second day, no one had registered and the only person, who showed up earlier, did not come with guarantors and so was turned away.

However, the Center registered eight people on the first day of the exercise.

Mr Twumasi Baidu Johnson, Assembly Member for the Anglican Electoral Area who was at the registration center and spoke to the GNA said, the process has been slow due to the low publicity from the Electoral Commission (EC) and also the inability of some potential voters to get guarantors is making the process frustrating.
