4 Dead, Others Injured In MMT Bus Crash

Four persons, all males, died on Monday morning when a Metro Mass Transit bus crushed into tipper truck on the Dawenya- Afloa Highway.

Forty-one others also sustained injuries and have been admitted at the Tema General Hospital.

The accident occurred at about 4:30am, Monday morning near Miosto on the Tema-Aflao Highway.
Over speeding

The Tema Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP), Ms Juliana Obeng who confirmed the incident said the Tipper Truck with registration number, GN 2413-13 loaded with sand and the Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number GE 4849-11 were both heading towards Tema.

She said at a spot near the Central University at Miosto, the Metro Mass bus rammed into the tipper truck.

ASP Obeng said the police suspect the accident must have occurred due to poor visibility, lack of attention and misjudgement on the part of the metro mass bus driver.

Interim measure

This is the third accident on that same stretch in the spate of three weeks.

Three students of the Central University died in similar circumstances on April 27, 2016 while on May 1, 2016 one person died and seven sustained injuries at that same spot of the road

According to ASP Obeng, as an interim measure, the Tema Regional Police MTTU will liaise with the Ghana Highway Authority to discuss the possibility of mounting a series of ramps on that segment of the road to curb the rate of accidents on that stretch.
