Chairman Wontumi Apologises To Manhyia North MP

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has unreservedly apologised to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, for physically assaulting him at one of the registration centres during the limited registration exercise in Kumasi.

This follows a truce brokered by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Council of Elders of the party, Mr Akenten Appiah Menkah, last Friday at his residence.

Truce

The meeting – which was held at the instance of the Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, and a leading member of the party, Mr George Ayisi Boateng – was attended by the feuding parties and their counsel.

Court case

The Regional Chairman had earlier been hauled to the Asokwa Magistrate’s Court following a complaint of assault lodged against him by the MP and Felix Ibrahim, the Manhyia North Constituency Secretary of the party.

However, on the day of the court case, the complainants wrote through their lawyers to the court to discontinue with the case while they resolved it out of court.

The court agreed to the request and admitted Chairman Wontumi to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties, one of whom should deposit a land title document or GH¢10,000 at the court registry.

The case was subsequently adjourned to June 1, 2016 when both parties were supposed to furnish the court with the settlement.

Confirmation

Mr Owusu Amankwah, who confirmed the settlement to the Daily Graphic, said their lawyers were putting the terms of the settlement together for submission to the court on the next adjourned date.

He said the chairman showed remorse for his action and offered an apology.

According to him, they agreed to let sleeping dogs to lie and to bury the hatchet for peace to prevail.
